A No. 2 pencil
And a dream can
Take you
anywhere.
-Joyce A. Myers
******************************************************************
A male patient was just waking up from anesthesia after having
his wisdom teeth extracted, and his
wife was sitting by his side. His eyes fluttered open and
he said, "You're beautiful." Then he
fell asleep again. His wife had never heard him say that,
so she stayed by his side full of joy.
A few minutes later, his eyes fluttered open and he said,
"You're cute!"
The wife was disappointed because instead of "beautiful,"
it was now "cute."
She said, "What happened to 'beautiful'?"
The man replied, "The drugs are wearing off!"

Know the GV classifications of caries.
Class 1 (I) - tops (pit & fissures, occlusasls, and linguals
of molars and maxillary incisors)
Class 2 (II) - back sides (proximal surfaces of premolars
and molars)
Class 3 (III) - front sides (anterior proximals but NOT incisal
edges)
Class 4 (IV) - front sides & tops (anterior proximals
WITH incisal edges)
Class 5 (V) - gumline (cercical 3rd of facial or lingual surfaces
Class 6 (VI) - incisal edges of anterior teeth and cusps of
posterior teeth
Effect dose (ED50) - dose that produces a therapuertic response
in 50% of the subjects given the drug
Lethal dose (LD50) - dose that produces death in 50% of the
subjects given the drug
Therapeutic Index (TI) - ration of the median lethal dose
(LD50) to th emedian effective dose (ED50).
Expresses the safety of the drug. The HIGHER the TI, the
safer the drug!
Cholinergic drugs - stimulate the PANS (parasymphathetic)
neurotransmitter - acetylcholine
termination is by acetylcholinersterase
ex. pilocarpine - for xerostomia: stimulates saliva
Anticholinergic drugs - inhibit the effects of the PANS (parasymphathetic)
ex. Atropine - decreases saliva
Abbreviations:
q- every
qd - every day
bid- twice a day
tid - three a day
qid - four a day
pc - before meals
hs - at bed time (hours of sleep)
Metabolization:
PEAL - Plasma=Esters : Amides=Liver

of the distal root of # 30?
A) 11
B) 12
C) 13
D) 14

office during an emergency?
A) sugar-water or similiar product
B) oxygen
C) epinephrine
D) Ammonia capsules
E) telephone
3. Which of the following nerve exits the cranium through
the foramen ovale?
A. Facial
B. Maxillary
C. Opthalmic
D. Mandibular
E. Glossopharyngeal
4. A 63-year-old patient has been receiving radiation therapy
for head and neck cancer. An examination reveals multiple
areas of crevicular caries. This patient's condition MOST
likely resulted from which of the following?
A. Accumulation of calculus
B. Change in dietary practices
C. Dysfunctional salivary glands
D. Change in types of oral bacteria
E. Excessive radiation to the dentition
5. Which of the following local anesthetics can be administered
intravenously to treat cardiac
A. arrhythmias?
B. Lidocaine
C. Benzocaine
D. Prilocaine
E. Mepivacaine
F. Propoxycaine
6. Which of the following BEST represents the reason that
nitroglycerin is effective in treating anginal pain?
A. Causes general vascular dilation
B. Possesses central analgesic actions
C. Produces specific coronary vasodilation
D. Increases efficiency of the myocardium
E. Has a negative inotropic effect on the heart

Answers
1. A
2. B
3. D...The mandibular nerve is one of the three divisions
of the fifth cranial or trigeminal nerve. The first division
(opthalmic) exits through the superior orbital fissure, the
second division (maxillary) through the foramen rotundum,
and the third (mandibular) through the foramen ovale.
4. C Radiation therapy causes atrophy of the salivary glands,
which results in decreased production and excretion of saliva
into the oral cavity.
5. A Lidocaine is used specifically to treat ventricular
arrhythmias. Benzocaine is not used in an injectable form;
it is a topical anesthetic only. Propoxycaine is an ester-type
anesthetic with a higher potential for an allergic reaction.
Prilocaine and mepivacaine are used only as local anesthetics.
6. A Anginal pain results from myocardial ischemia. Nitroglycerin
reduces pain by causing vasodilation, pooling blood in the
venous system, and decreasing venous return to the heart.
